It's Eco Week - Starting Dydd Llun Hydref 12fed

We've been looking at litter in year 3 for Eco Week. There's been a lot of sorting to do!
We've used maths skills to sort the litter by using a Venn Diagram.

We then made graphs of our results- which material was found the most in our litter?
We also tried to put results in a pie chart. What's the best way to show our results?

Many thanks to everyone who helped make our Eco week such fun. The costumes were great!

We went on a litter pick with the officers from RCT. We were surprised at how much litter we picked.

Nice hat Mr Williams!

Strutting our stuff!

We will be out and about in Pontyclun looking at the litter hotspots. We have lots of different activities planned and please could you bring in any re-cycled litter for our 3D models on Wednesday. Anything will do as long as it been washed out first - thanks.

Don't forget on Thursday it's Go Green Day so you can wear anything green. On Friday it's the fashion show with your re-cycled costumes.

Magnets and Springs

We have been carrying out different experiments this term on magnets and springs. In our first experiment we had a selection of different objects and we had to predict which ones were magnetic and which materials were not. We had some interesting results. We discovered that an old 2p coin(1972) was magnetic and a recent (2008) 2p coin wasn't. We used our communication skills asking questions and responding to each other.

We've also discovered which type of magnet has the strongest pull. We investigated this with paper clips.

This week we investigated the force of an elastic band on small toy cars. We had a selection of toy cars and had to predict how far the car would travel when we pulled back on the elastic band. We had some interesting results and had lots of fun watching the cars whizzing across the hall floor. We used our number skills by measuring the distance each car travelled and our ICT skills when some of us took the photos. Here are some of the pictures we took.

Music -Indian Hasthas

The children have been listening to different types of music and had to improvise movements to each piece of music- could they guess which animal matched each piece of music? Can you? Which animal- fish, bird?

The children had to listen to the rhythm and dynamics of the music.

During the last few weeks the children have been exploring descriptive sounds based around an animal theme in their music lessons. This week they have been watching some traditional Indian dance movements for different animals.

Hasthas are traditional Indian hand gestures. They are closely linked to the telling of traditional stories. This tradition of telling stories with music and movement goes back hundreds of years.

Can you guess which animals the children
are imitating? The children have been encouraged to let their hands take on the personality and mood of the different animals.

Video clips were shown to the class to help them improve their techniques.

James is pretending to be a deer and Lauren is the demonstrating the shape used for bees.

Raja abhogi is the name of the music the children listened to. They were asked to think about which of the animals studied they could most easily imagine moving in time to the music.

The children improvise moving their hands as their chosen animal in time to the music. The use of facial expressions is an important part of the dance.

Art - Colour Mixing

Over the past two weeks we've been looking at the work of Welsh artist George Chapman. In his oil painting
'Y Traffordd' (The Motorway) we've looked carefully at the colour scheme and tried to create parts of his painting with our own colour mixing.

We've used many skills including communicating information and with our talking partners we've asked many questions to each other e.g How can we make the different colours? What do we need to mix?

This is some of us at work today. We will post some more pictures of our finished work.
